The pictures above show a bit of the “fiesta” atmosphere that is prevalent here in Cebu, where very little excuse is needed to have a good time. The justification for the party pictured here was Mother’s Day. Parades, bands, and gatherings large and small are everywhere.Altercations involving male poultry are also everywhere, and can be legal (if held in a government run arena), or maybe not-so-legal-but-invisible if a one-day permit has been obtained by a private citizen. At least, the local constabulary will look the other way if the permit has been acquired.
If you look closely at the images you can see the people crowded around one of the not-so-legal gatherings. I sat on the balcony last Sunday and listened to the roar of the crowd as they worked up from the ‘amateur’ levels to the title bouts. The last fight of the day had about 150 people gathered. Very interesting!
